The Tree
There is something strangely beautiful about hearing an absurd moment inside a Minecraft game turn into a meditation on identity, isolation, free will, and hope.
What begins with a man trapped inside a tree gradually becomes something that reads almost like existential prose poetry-while still ending in the most Technoblade way possible.
“I’ve begun to question: Why am I here? What is my purpose inside this tree? Was I placed here by some greater power, or… was it my destiny to be trapped inside this tree? Do I truly have free will?
I ponder these questions as life slowly goes on without me. Is this a dream? W-was the life I knew before even real? I call for help, but no one answers. I begin to question whether there was ever a life outside…
The tree… Who am I? Am I the tree?
During these past two years, I’ve had a lot of time to think. I’ve learned that the tree loves me, and I love the tree. The tree protects me-and one day, I shall be free.
I… I dream of that day. The day that… I am awakened.
I hear a faint sound. Is it lightning? But if lightning exists, then everything else must exist, too. I feel a pull. It is time to leave the tree.
I’m apprehensive, yet eager to return to the outside world-and I still won.”
- Technoblade, The Tree
It is funny, dramatic, unexpectedly sincere, and somehow genuinely moving. For a moment, the tree is no longer merely a glitch or an obstacle. It becomes a prison, a protector, and eventually something that must be left behind.
That is probably why the monologue stayed with me: beneath the joke is the simple hope that, however long we feel stuck, one day something will pull us forward-and we will be ready to leave.
